About This Book
Smart Road Traffic in the 5G Era was written by Liu Gan, founder of I-ROAD, and published by Tongji University Press in 2020. An English edition is currently being translated and will be published worldwide before long.
Overview
As communications technology advances from one generation to the next, the arrival of fifth-generation (5G) networks — together with frontier technologies such as intelligent sensing, the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, and blockchain — is set to drive rapid progress in the field of road transportation. Smart roads and intelligent vehicles will work in combination to serve mobility, and the boom in the connected-vehicle (Internet of Vehicles) industry, with all its possibilities, is unprecedented.
This book sets out an architecture and a roadmap for building smart road traffic in the age of 5G and the connected vehicle. It puts forward an innovative framework for the integrated use of data across four elements — people, vehicles, roads, and the environment; introduces the author’s invention, the “Three-Tier Traffic Signal Guidance System,” as a measure for congestion management; and presents a vision for a new industry ecosystem.
The book serves as a reference for planning, design, construction, and management agencies in road transportation as well as for researchers, and can also be used as a working handbook for colleges and universities offering programs in traffic engineering and intelligent transportation.
The Author’s Aim
Addressing the construction of smart road traffic under the conditions of a new generation of communications technology such as 5G, this book offers a systematic examination of the relationships among road traffic accidents, road congestion, road traffic environmental pollution, and the connected-vehicle industry — interwoven, at times, with more fragmentary reflections. Most importantly, the author lays out concrete technical pathways, solutions, and inventions. His hope is that the book may serve as one cornerstone in the building of smart road traffic — content simply to make even a small contribution.
